Coolant all over the driveway...
Coolant all over the driveway...
Ok, I'm currently very upset at both of my vehicles.... I was in the garage trying to get my 93 Corolla to crank over(only the starter seems to turn, the crankshaft doesn't
) and I was thinking the battery just doesn't have enough juice. I had my T/A hooked to the Corolla with jumper cables and am watching the Corolla's battery charge to about 3/5 (wouldn't go higher). I go back to my T/A and check the connection of the jumper cable and what do I see? Some sort of fluid spattered onto the battery, intake, pulleys, A/C, Alternator, Crankshaft... pretty much everything at the front pass. side of the bay. I look under the car and see a very large wet spot that leads to a puddle. Sure enough it's coolant.... and I'm not really sure where it's coming from.
Could whatever the problem(water pump maybe) is that is causing the coolant to leak also cause hesitation? When in the 4500+ RPM range, my car feels like it has NO power... are these two problems possibly related?
EDIT: Forgot to mention that I didn't see any coolant actually leak out, just saw the spatter and the puddle. Also, I opened the radiator about 15 minutes after I shut the car off and it still looked like it had a lot of coolant in it....

Re: Coolant all over the driveway...
Shoulds like it COULD be a w/p mine did the same sort of thing, came home let it sit a bit then it would leak, but I never saw a lose of power? when was the last time you did a tune up plugs, wires, etc?
Re: Coolant all over the driveway...
I did new plugs with the headers, new wires a few weeks after that. This was about 10 months ago... if even that long. I never noticed it leak... i just saw the puddle and the coolant all over.... Anybody know about how much it would cost to have a shop replace my water pump?
Re: Coolant all over the driveway...
My guess would have been that it came out of the recovery tank but its kind of hard to determine without seeing it happen. Out of the recovery tank is a possiblilty if the thermostat is bad or your hoses are clogged up. Happens in my car due to the bubbles that seem to be impossible to get out of the hoses. It only does it once in a while, it will poor heavily out of the overflow tank and everywhere on the pasengers side of the car. Have you drained the coolant recently by any chance? Maybe this isnt the problem. The lack of power you are talking about doesnt sound right, and maybe it is related to the leak. So maybe it did come from somewhere else such as the water pump. Since you did do a header install i would go back and look over all of your hoses, making sure they are not resting on your headers. Thats happened to me as well. Good luck.
Re: Coolant all over the driveway...
I poured some coolant in today and let the car run. From underneath it looked as though it was coming from a small hole in the bottom of the water pump. I took a few pictures because I'm not sure if that hole is supposed to be filled
. Hopefully someone can tell me.

Re: Coolant all over the driveway...
It appears that you are losing coolant from the weep hole in the bottom of your water pump, which is an indication that a seal and or bearing inside the water pump is failing. You will need to replace the water pump to fix the leak. If you have access to a coolant system pressure tester, you can put your cooling system under pressure and check the water pump again to be sure, before you replace the w/p.
Re: Coolant all over the driveway...
I started it up after putting some coolant in so it was pressurized then. It seemed to come out of that hole. Is the water pump something I should try to do myself or is it rather difficult? I am very hesitant to try to do the water pump on the T/A since I just did the water pump on my 1.8L Corolla.... I just now got it running a few minutes ago lol, but I finished the water pump about 3-4 weeks ago... I ran into several problems when doing it: very offset timing, broken middle timing cover, replaced starter and battery because the starter didn't seem to engage(turned out the key on the crankshaft shot out). So basically, how difficult of a job would the water pump be? What all would need to come off in order to get to it?
Sorry for the rambling... I'm a bit anxious about getting the Corolla put back together again.

Re: Coolant all over the driveway...
Yeah - mine failed on me on wednesday....low coolant light came on and when I parked it at the shop, it was streaming out the weap hole...
It took me 2.5 hours to change it out, and my cost on the part was $130. It's not a hard job at all, you remove intake, disconnect all sensors and hoses. Remove the smog pump and pull the bracket that holds it on, there are 3 pump bolts per side...then put the thermo and sensor in the new pump...get the mating surface on the block very very clean...then apply gaskacinch to the block and gasket, put the gasket on and let it sit for 5 min, then install water pump...when you get the system filled and started, open the bleed valves to get the air out of the system.

The first one says it is being optimized when I tried it. The other two(002 and 003) are choppy the first time through, but just restart it and it is perfect.

Re: Coolant all over the driveway...
that's the EXACT same problem i'm having...gmpartsdirect.com has mine on 'special order' right now....i'm pretty pissed, cause i've been waiting for 2 weeks for it to come in already! you should go pickup a NEW wp from a parts store.
