Converting to braided hoses for Power steering pump

I want to convert the hoses from the power steering pump to the rack to braided stainless lines but am totally stumped on what fittings will thread into the pump and the steering box. Anyone do this and can point me to the right sizes?

Re: Converting to braided hoses for Power steering pump

I feel your pain. Years ago I converted my Z to braided fuel lines and pump. I have no knowledge of plumbing and every time I go to the hardware store for plumbing I end up with a headache. ID this, OD that,

Here's what I know from dealing with braided fuel line and fittings.

The tread size for AN fittings is in reference to 16. So an AN 8 is 8/16 or 1/2"

So you want to measure the tread size of the fittings you have now. Then look at the angles such as straight, 90* 45* and such. Determine what size line you want and start looking at fittings. There are also kits available but you would have to determine if they have at least most of the fittings you need. If they do, you can simply add the one or 2 fittings they don't.

Look at fittings here: http://www.summitracing.com/search/D.../?autoview=SKU

A few things I can tell you about hose and fittings. Use the same company fittings and tubing. Due to variations of tubing thickness, it's sometimes very difficult to get tubing from one company to fit in a connector of another company.

Also, without the right tools, it is near impossible to cut the tubing to work correctly. I did not have the cutting tool and tried several times to cut it with a high speed cut off wheel. It wasn't till I wrapped it with tape that it worked. But it was not fun. Get the tool.

Last piece of advise. You may want to consider the fake hose coverings instead of the real deal. When done correctly, they are in indistinguishable from the real deal, particularly low in front of the engine where it's hard to see anyway.

See the thing is, I'm not new to the braided line game. I've already done the fuel lines, the transmission lines and a few of the smaller coolant lines. I'm wanting to takle the powersteering lines next only due to some new found funds. The only issue I have right now is that I can't for the life of me find anyone who has done this on an LT1 camaro and with all my research on-line still can't find what thread goes into the pump itself and then into the steering box.

So pull them out of a unit at a junk yard. If that's all you need to know. How many choices are there? Have to be either 1/4 or 3/8 or 1/2. So if you had to get all 3 so what?

I just hate spending money on things that I may never use... I guess the junkyard is a viable option.
I just find it hard to believe that no-one has done this on an LT1 camaro....

You don't actually have to buy anything. Except a little PS fluid. Pull one of your hoses off and check the size.

How about this. Look at a hose at the auto parts store to get the size. Then you don't even have to get your hands dirty. Until you do the work that is.

BTW with reference to spending money you don't have to for fittings you won't use. Get over it! You only want to know the size, anything with the correct threads will work. Even a $0.50 pipe plug would work. You don't have to buy a $10 AN fitting to find out what size it is. Remember you are replacing perfectly good hoses with something you don't need in the first place.
