Converting block from obd1 to obd2

What is needed make an obd1 block hook up correctly to all sensors in an obd2 car? I know there were a few changes, and I will be going from a non vented opti to a vented. I am buying a longblock to build my new motor with and am just trying to figure out what I need to do to get it to work in my 96. Thanks.

The blocks are the same. The 96 has a different knock sensor in the passenger side of the block and an additional knock sensor in the drivers side of the block, the timing cover has a provision for a crank sensor and the cams are different to work with the vented/pin drive opti. The coil and ignition module are different(not sure how). The rest of the sensors are the same.

And OBD2 also has rear oxygen sensors but that wouldnt affect the motor.

LT1 F-bodies only have one knock sensor (in the RH side of the block). OBD-II has an additional sensor in the EVAP system. The cam is not physically different than a 1995 (OBD-I).

If you want to use an OBDI engine in an OBDII car and have it hook up like it did from the factory, you will need The front cover from and 96-97, as well as the crank pos sensor and the reluctor ring. In order to drive the vented opti, you will also need a cam for a 95-97 as it is driven of a dowel pin, not a spline like the 93-94s. The block itself is the same, all LT1 Fbodys use only 1 knock sensor on the passenger side, however you may need to change it, as they list 2 different part #s. So if you still have the engine from the 96 you will need to switch out those parts.
Correct me if Im wrong though.

I helped a friend pull an engine from a 97 and it had an extra knock sensor. I assumes this was normal. The engine in my car came out of a 96 Caprice police car and it also had two. Did some cars have two?

All F-Body LT1's had a single KS. All Corvette LT1's had two KS's. I honestly don't know how many they put on the B-Body engines..... and it doesn't matter, because the KS's are screwed into the block drain holes, and all blocks have the same two drain holes in the same two places.

OBD-I uses a 4.5Kohm KS, OBD-II uses a 100Kohm KS. The PCM can be modified to accept a different sensor than it was intended to use.

If you are using the block from an OBD-I car, to replace the block on an OBD-II car, you simply move all your accessories and sensors over to the new block. Nothing else needs to be done to it.

Thanks Fred, that helps a lot. When it comes time to swap motors I will just move everything over.
