Compatible blocks

I have a 1996 LT1 that i got a little over a month ago. Rather than tearing apart the motor and rebuild it I am thinking about building a new motor so I can still drive the car. Assuming I get a set of LT1 heads what chevy blocks are compatible? Is there something different about the blocks versus older small blocks? My experience is limited to older chevies, mainly big blocks so i am starting fresh here. Also i would like to have 4 bolt mains versus 2 bolt.

Thanks for any replies,

Steve

Re: Compatible blocks

LTx blocks are gen II small block chevys. You can see the differences on the front of the block...timing cover is much different because under it is housed a third gear for the water pump...water pump boss has 2 openings per side to allow for the reverse flow cooling.

LTx heads in stock form can only work with LTx blocks
Gen I SBC heads in stock form can not work on LTx blocks

Anything can be modified to fit though...

'96 corvette blocks are 4-bolt main
I have heard that factory repacement blocks are also 4-bolt.
