Comp XE 227/233

I have just installed this camshaft along with Lloyd Elliott heads and Jet Hot LT's. I wanted to get some input from others who are running the XE grinds. I have searched and read a lot of other threads about these cams, but I wanted to share some of my thoughts. The cam pulls to around 6200-6300 and THATS IT. I will not pull any further. The car falls flat on its face at that rpm range. I don't really mind that because I don't want to rev it too high, but I was hoping for 6500 and that is what Combo Motorsports told me to expect. My question is this: how do the other XE grinds perform for you guys? Do any of you have this same power fall off at that rpm range or does your car continue to pull. My car practically STOPS pulling at 6300 with this cam. Also, this cam seems to pull much harder from around 50-60 mph than it does down low. My brother has a CC306 powered automatic car and it pulls harder in 1st than my XE powered car does. My pulls harder 2-4 gear in my M6 though. I really haven't decided about the cam yet, but I will know more this afternoon. I have some dyno time scheduled for 2:30 this afternoon. I am not very optimistic about the numbers that I will put down. I feel like the car has much more in it, but it is going to take some time to get there.

Well it depends on the lsa it is on. THe higher it is the lower the power band will be. The lower it is the higher the power band will be. But i also remeber reading somewhere that the XE grinds don't pull as hard on the top end as do regular grinds. But i'm not sure on that.

I'm looking at that cam too!I ran it through Desktop Dyno and with ported heads and no other mods it showed peakhp at 5000rpm and peak tq at 3500.Keep us posted as to what it runs! Let me know what all you have done to your engine and I'll see how close DD2K is to reality

I'm running that cam and just returned from Gainesville and ran the time in my sig. I'm shifting somewhere in the low 6k range, but have had problems hitting the rev-lmiter. I'm not entirely sure where It's set. I've got a PCMForless tune and I'm trying to find out from them. I'll let you know.

Edit: Thats a 111 LSA BTW. and just to clarify Dyno numbers in the sig are with my previous setup, a CC305.

all I know is that I'm going to use the Crane 99893 dual springs, $113.50 from Thunder....and they don't require machinig...

I am running the cam on a 112 LSA. I will have some real world info for you guys later tonight after I return from the dyno. I really don't know what kind of numbers to expect. Here is a detailed mod list:
1994, M6 z28
Lloyd Elliott ported heads
227/233, 560/569 XE camshaft
1.6 pro mag roller rockers
Jet Hot Longtubes with Hooker Y-Pipe and Flowmaster
SVO 30lb injectors
Moroso CAI
Stock 3.42 gearing
MSD 6A
Madwolf Mail Order Computer Tuning

The car may put down a decent number, but I expect that some fine tuning will bring out some more power.

WhonTime,

I'll be very interested. Your mods are almost identical with the exception of the Lloyd Elliot heads. Mine were done by a local shop with a bad reputation. Dyno numbers in the sig are with those heads and a CC305 cam.

make sure the valves are 1/8 or less past zero. Just enough to keep em quiet is where the car will run its best. Alot of people have them too tight.

Rocker adjustment and more tuning are the only reason that
I can see the RPMs to stop climbing. I would have expected a lil more RPM from the 227/233 as well.

What kinda RPM are people seeing from the 224/230?

The 230/236 seems to pull to 6500 RPM or so, maybe that is about right for the slightly smaller 227/233. ??????

anyone else???

I have the 224/230, 114LSA on a 110 ICL and I make peak power at about 5900 and nothing more past about 6100...I'd say that's about right considering that cam is probably on a 108 or 109 ICL and that is going to lower the peak HP point a little.

Have you checked the fuel pressure at that RPM? Your fuel pump could be running out of volume at higher RPM. Get a fuel pressure gauge and tape it to the window, then do some high-RPM runs to see if you get a pressure drop. The guy that installed my stuff said he did this with mine both on the dyno and on the street. The pressure stayed where it should. He said that his car needed a new pump, because about 5800 RPM, the pressure just took a nose dive.

With the 230/236, my car does not drop off even at 6400. It peaks at about 6200, but only drops slightly from there to the redline.

Sorry, I just realized that this thread had been brought back up. Here are the details of my latest dyno runs.

Peak numbers- 351hp/347tq
The AF Ratio was 11.8 across the board, so I am losing a little power due to being so rich. Probably 10-15rwhp
The car makes its peak power at about 5900rpm and I pull it to 6200rpm.
I am still sorting out some problems and I still think this combo has 375rwph in it. The torque curve is great on the car with it making 345 through the midrange and its still at 300 at 6000rpm.
The car is totally driveable, but it does have some low rpm cam surge which is to be expected I guess. Overall, I am pretty happy now that I have been driving the car for a while. Hopefully, I can get everything dialed in a little better before long.
I just installed a Moser 12 bolt and 3.73's so I am ready for the tracks to open up around here
If anyone has any questions about the cam I will try my best to answer them.

Whontime. Are your numbers before the 12 bolt? It's funny but my dyno and A/F was almost exactly the same. I think I've got another few ponies in mine as well, but haven't had the time to get my chip re-tuned with PCMForless. Last time I ran Datamaster on it I was riiiich.
