Comp dowel pin too SHORT, anyone ever had this problem

Dont know if this is an isolated case or not, but doing a cam swap on a buddies car, XE224/230, ordered it from thunder, I was bout to grind the pin down to the .620 it needs to be for the vented opti, and the dowel pin in it was only .500"......whats up with that, Ive only ever heard of them coming in the .800+" range??

Take it to a local machine shop and they have a special slide hammer that can pull out the stocker and then you can install it in the new cam.

Oh, forgot about that part, I took it to a shop today, they went at it with the dowel pin puller and tapped it from the other side with a punch and couldnt even budge it!!

I think comp Fckd up and put it in wayyy to far, so no way its comin out without heat, and dont feel so much like heating up a cam!

Ended up just ordering it from Summit to get it here tomorrow, hopefully someone will take responsibilty and cover the cost difference and shipping back to them!

Yah, Im not asking for advice, just trying to kinda figure out who should be at fault here, Im assuming its 100% comps fault...Ive never ever heard of one of their dowel pins being shorter than .800" on any hyrdo roller cam at least, even if its ordered specifically for an lt1.

I just put the pin in a vise, and twisted it off, worked pretty good. And tapped the new pin in.

.620 While I don't think that .620 would be too short I know that the reccommended length is like 0.650 - 0.680

I recently had the same dilemma and managed to get the pin out, but I was just wondering if you even need the pin at all. It looked to me like the three bolts on the cam sprocket fit into the cloverleaf on the opti and would be able to drive it that way. Is that possible? Just wondering

No, the pin is absolutely the only thing that drives the opti.

Stocker was .622 I think if I remember right, and I believe the ABSOLUTE biggest, according to shoeboxes info, is like .675, dunno where you got that info?

i don't think you should of messed with it. The pin should of still been long enough to do its job.

I just got done putting a stroker motor with a gm 847 and I had the same problem. .500" works just fine, just to be sure though put some playdoe in the opti and see how far the dowel pin goes in. Ours went 3/16" into the opti and everything is perfect.

Unless you specificaly asked for a certain length I don't think it is comps fault.
