Comp Cams Guideplates

I have ported AI 190cc heads and got the valvetrain package when I bought them which included comp cams guideplates. I've had a weird noise i couldn't track down ever since i fired it up. I thought it was the timing chain rubbing but i removed the timing cover numerous times and removed more material and there was no signs of rubbing. Last time i looked at my pushrods i noticed slight wear where it touches the guideplates. I know now from reading the board that comp guideplates really shouldn't be used and that the GM ones should. I'm going to order a set of GM guideplates tomorrow but my question is:

Has anyone expereinced a noise from the pushrods rubbing the guideplates when using the comp guideplates.

Re: Comp Cams Guideplates

Where are you seeing the wear, on the pushrod or the guideplate? I just got through re-adjusting my valve lash (motor running method) last week and I looked at the pushrods where they pass through the guideplates just to see if there was any wear marks. There were none. This is a new rebuild (has about 1000 miles on it now) and I'm using the GM guideplates and Comp Cams Hi Tech pushrods.

Wear marks were on the pushrods and they are hardended. I think I may pick up the GM guideplates and throw them in just to see, they're cheap enough.

Re: Comp Cams Guideplates

mine are making the wierd noise too! I have comp guideplates from AI too. My motor has about 550 miles on it now. I was going to try isky adjustable ones, but are the GM ones really good at lining up?? My comp ones are horrible at the valve tip. If the GM ones are ok at EVERY rocker, then I will just get those ones! Anyone have the part number handy?

Re: Comp Cams Guideplates

What part number guideplates do y'all have from Comp? Do they have the curved face towards the pushrods or is it flat? If someone has the GM guideplates in front of them, can you measure the clearances for the pushrods? Thanks.

GM P/N 14011051, $2.37 ea when I got them from Dal Slabaugh. I didn't have any alignment issues with the rocker arm to valve stem.

Re: Comp Cams Guideplates

alright thanks cehan. I wonder why the comp ones suck so much ***... Is the whole part of the rocker tip in the valve stem? Any rocker hanging off the tip, and if so by how much?

LE1 stock castings, the roller tip aligns completely on the valve stem. Of course, after checking the pushrod length, I couldn't use the stock length anymore. I had to order some that were shorter to get the geometry right.
