Comp Cams "306"

Is it possible to run a 306cc without tunning.. I have headers on the way. But I i have to fix a leak on the back of my intake and wanted to install the cam. Or should I just wait?

I did...it ran fine for a while...you will have crappy idel and crappy fuel consumption and it will not be as strong than with a tune! But yes..it will run

Ditto. I gained almost a half second with a tune.

Re: Comp Cams "306"

Where can I get it tuned. There are no local shops around here that deal with LT1's it's all about LS1's around here.......And how much will this tunning cost?

PCMforless did my tuning. Great price, fast turn-around, and nailed it right on the first time.

I have the 306 cam, and it starts, idles, and drives with great manners.

i just got that cam too and i was wondering the same thing but i also have ported heads and intake along with it. Would i need a tune before running it at all. I don't plan on driving it w/o a tune but i do want to start it before i take it to get tuned.

it will start and run fine...just a lil crappy only reason you need a tune is for efficency and that little extra power

Re: Comp Cams "306"

I just checked my time slips and found I went from 13.11 to 12.68 and gained 4 mph to 110 with the tune. In fact, I recall that I was disappointed with my track times after the cam/header/injector/hydra-rev install and stock tune. Yea, the engine loped really nice but wasn't running like it could. The tune made all the difference.
I used MADZ and he has been very helpful. Fortunately, my cam and the 306 are very popular choices so tuning guys have tried and true programs that work very well with these cams.

Re: Comp Cams "306"

I had MADZ28 do my tune and the car runs outstanding (couple of oil leaks) but that's a whole other story, nothing to do with the tune. I could not imagine running this cam without a custom tune. I have to drive 15 MPH through my neighborhood here and with a tune the cam surge is still pretty bad, and forget about running second around the neighborhood, and that's with a tune. I would have to say get a tune, it isn't really that much when you look at what you are spending on everything else, why slack on something that could help out greatly and is really not that expensive. Just my 2 cents. Hope you enjoy the cam, I know I do.
