coil's going bad.
coil's going bad.
i noticed arcing on the ignition coil, took it off and tested it and it had 9.8k ohm's...
i bought a wells from autozone for 15 bucks and it had 9.3k ohm's when new, and i put it on for a few days but then the bad idle came back and so did the arcing. took it off and it was around 9.8k ohm's
Today i went to central auto parts and got a 30 dollar tru tech coil which had around 7.7k ohm's put it on and car ran pretty good, still is but i want to know if it is going to die also?
it all started on a rainy night... car started just randomly misfiring... so basically can a bad opti(vented) kill coils?
the symptoms are rough idle and miss up to about 2krpm
thanks!
oh and the cap and rotor were replaced once around 60k miles i think, its now at 89k, what is the main part that gets effected by water, is there any cleaning i can do to maybe dry things up or something???
searching has only lead to posts with dead ends...

Re: coil's going bad.
the spark was jumping from the coil (weld on the metal square thing(magnet?) around the coil) to the black bracket or the head(dont know which) constantly, and occasionally a big spark from somewhere else, about an inch closer to the drivers side..., and about an inch long.
with the constant spark i was barley able to see it blink, and the other one would lite up the few square inches area good.
arcing as i know it is when there is a gap in the spark path and it jumps the gap, or when a connection or something has too much resistance so it jumps through air to ground(block/heads/black bracket)
i noticed it by looking at key area's under the hood at nite time.

Re: coil's going bad.
all ive replaced was the coil, only major thing,
ive unplugged maf so it is not an o2 or thing like that.
im kinda sure that the egr is the problem of my miss at load up to 2k
at idle it would be erraticly missing, not major but enough to rattle the car.
at idle in gear with the ac on it would randomly miss and send the rpm's down a little and throw the car to the side, then surging while accelerating and maybe a very slight surge while cruising... thats all i can think of.
