clunking in rear

Hi guys! What's the clunking in the rear of my 95 T/A.Sounds like it might be the rear end. Isn't this a very common problem w/these cars? Is there a simple (inexpensive) way to fix this? Thanks for any comments! Larry

Re: clunking in rear

Start with the cheap and easy stuff first.

Check the tranny mount. If that is good, check the u-joints. If they are good, pull the rear cover off the differential and inspect gears for abnormal wear or broken teeth.
A while back I was hearing clunk noise from the rear of the car. I thought it was either the differential going out or the u-joints. Both looked good and after I changed the diff. fluid, the noise went away. Be sure add the limited slip additive.

Re: clunking in rear

I had an odd clunk sound everytime Id go over a bump.. turned out my damn coil spring was just rubbing the frame and would kinda slide when it was under load causing the noise.

Re: clunking in rear

I had that clunking issue in my car (M6) and it turned out that the 2 bolts vertical bolts that hold the back of the torque arm to the rear end had loosend up. I tightend them, a few weeks later it came back. Ended up using double nuts and locktite on 'em, hasn't loosend up again

Re: clunking in rear

There is some slack on my rear end fer sure. I got under her and was able to rotate the drive shaft back and forth... My clunk happens when I slow down enough and the car still holding on 2nd gear, then at certain speed I touch the gas and then the tranny shifts into first gear and "clunk" it goes once. I can repeat it at will now. I know in my case is the slack issue while switching from 2nd to 1st.

I will eventually swap to 3.42s and hopefully the clunck will go away. Has anyone here had any problem with the Tranny having some slack? I can't recall if the drive shaft was rotating the trannys output shaft or was the u-joints the loose ones. Its dark now and Just came back from a long trip. hope this info is of some help.

Anyone else with similar problem?

Re: clunking in rear

It could be your pinion bearing. Check for play where it goes into the rear diff at the front (that part that connects to the driveshaft) as it could be this. It's not really likely but no one else has mentioned it yet.
