Clueless!!! video

Ok so i was goin to start my engine for the 1st time today.Put the starter in..ran the battery wire to it.when i went to go hook the battery up the starter made a weird noise!(brand new starter,no key in the ignition)

Sounds like your starter is spinning freely. Is it a stock starter? I know some aftermarket starters need to be shimmed.
Oh.. and the reason why the starter engaged when you connected the battery is because the solenoid wire and positive terminal on the starter are making contact... at least most likely that is what is happening.

Its a heavy duty starter but iam guesing its a stock put strong??ill look tmrw n see if the wires are touching thanks!

Dunno what to tell you. I'm building a 396 and am just going to use a stock starter to avoid having to shim the bitch.

After i see if those 2 wires are touching to i need to shim the starter?cause its making that sound with no key in the igniton only when i go to hook up the battery!

most reman starters have to be shimmed

make sure the starter bendix isn't sticking from sitting on a shelf

The wires are touching. This happened on my little brothers formula.

Ok so i took the stater off and connect the battery wire on the post and made sure the wires didnt touch.went to connect the battery and the same thing happened!now is thier usually a washer between the two wires?do i need to ground the starter to the block?

You're going to have to phrase your sentences more clearly. Put a washer between which two wires? The power wire (from the battery) and the purple solenoid wire do not attach to the same terminal on the starter. Perhaps I misunderstand...

No, you don't "have to" ground the starter to the block, as it's already bolted to the block. If it's installed, it's grounded.
