Cloyes 3145 timing chain with a CSI Waterpump
Cloyes 3145 timing chain with a CSI Waterpump
I have my motor all apart and i am ready to do a cam, and the valvetrain. I was also going to replace the timing chain/gears with the GM performance parts set for around $300. I was told that is a lot of money to spend on a timing chain and gears. I was wondering what you guys thought about going with the Cloyes 3145 timing chain and the CSI electric Waterpump. Is this the way to go?
Re: Cloyes 3145 timing chain with a CSI Waterpump
lots of people do it (i for one)
few things too know/do
you will not be able too reuse the CPS sensor at the bottom of the timing cover
you will also need the CPS deleted from the PCM
you will need too pull the stock waterpump drive shaft out of the block (easy and the remaining hole can be left un plugged)
you will need too block the timing cover with a freeze plug (1 1/8 or 1 1/16") about $2 part or have it welded shut where the pump shaft stuck through it (use some RTV too seal the freeze plug)
you will need too clearance the inside of the timing cover because the double roller is much thicker then a stock type chain (easy too do tho) use some grease on the chain when its installed, bolt the timing cover on too spec, then pull it back off and remove material where the grease is stuck too the timing cover, rinse and repeat until no grease is left on the inside of the cover
might be a good idea too get an LT4 KM too
oh and i dont remember the part# off hand for the chain (3145 sounds right tho) just make sure it is the one for the '87 and up roller block
maybe look into a rollmaster timing set...billet gears, same price as Cloyes

I usually turn a plug on the mill and press it in the TC looks good and works well...
Always check the clearance with the TC gasket in place... hell it doesn't take much to clearance the thing.
The CPS is only on some motors so this might not fit for you.

Crank Position Sensor
used for referencing misfires for OBD2 compliance (if i'm not mistaken). its not really needed
wish it would have been used for ignition timing...could have saved us all a ****load of headaches
