Close to setting this D#*N car on fire.......STOP ME.
Close to setting this D#*N car on fire.......STOP ME.
I've had this 95 Z for about four months and it keeps doing the same thing. Running fine, then all of a sudden a stumble and then shuts off. Then won't start.
I've replaced the coil, Opti-spark, Water pump (it was leaking into the opti). next is the ICM.
Somebody tell me what the problem is. Or at least give me some ideas. I've heard everything from the optical sensor to as simple as an ignition switch.
I've got fire into the coil but nothing coming out of it. Even with a new coil.
I've pretty much eliminated the pcm as the problem. (I have another 95 Z and it does the same thing with either pcm in the car.)
Please keep me from going to jail......for illegal burning.

Sounds like an electrical problem to me. Both the ICM and ignition switch are likely culprits. More symptoms would be helpful though. You could probably test the ignition switch by taking off the bottom trim panel and jiggling around the wires that are attached to the switch. A poor connection will make the car die. You could try tapping on the ICM too to see if it stalls. I wouldn't start replacing parts until you're sure of what it is though.

Bill have you checked the coil wire itself?
check the resitance in it and see what it is that could be the reason you are not getting any spark to the opti.
Hell if you cannot figure it out i can come over this weekend and see what i try to figure out with it. i will bring my car and if we have to swap some parts and see if that makes a difference.
but give me a call if you need my help, send a pm and i will send you my cell# if you don't have it already.

Sounds like a fuel issue. Fuel pump maybe....mine went out w/ 6x,xxx miles. When you turn your key to ACC do you hear your fuel pump? If you dont hear a buzzing/whinning noice then thats the problem.

Bill if you can get the car running run it till it cuts off then check the shrader valve on the back on the fuel rail and see it it has pressure! Sounds like the fuel pump is over heating and cutting off and now will not crank!
Re: Close to setting this D#*N car on fire.......STOP ME.
check the battery.. i know it sounds stupid easy but try it. my battery went dead and when i tried to jump it, it still wouldnt start (supposively there is some circuit breaker in the car that won't allow it to be jump started to protect the pcm, and of course i didnt know about this). an optispark, alternator, starter, and me ripping apart the steering column later my friend said "did you check the battery" "i tried to jump it and it still wouldnt start" he ran off w/ the battery to o'reilly's and the thing was so dead they had to charge it to tell me it was dead.

fuel pressure stays where it's supposed to all the time. I've swapped the coil wire and I've measured the output and input from the coil. The thing spins over just fine.....it just won't start. I'll check the connectors on the coil and the ICM. I've replace the coil and the Optispark. My latest theory is that the reman opti may be bad.
Jonathon you can come over any time. I work this monday and tuesday at the store. Stop by and see me. We'll come up with something.

Re: Close to setting this D#*N car on fire.......STOP ME.
you need to duplicate the problem, preferably somewhere where u can work on it. Then check to see if it's got fuel or spark. Then take it from there.
If you dont, you'll just end up replaceing parts hoping that you'll get the right thing. But to me, it sounds like a wiring issue. Have you tried shaking the wires underhood while it's acting up to see if it'll start?
