Climate control....or lack thereof

My climate controls no longer let me switch which vents the air blows out of. It comes out the defrost and floor vents at all times, even some when I have them shut off! Would I need to look at the vacuum valve control, or the mode selector switch itself? Anyone?

that definately sounds like a vacuum problem. check for a pinched or broken line, possibly in the engine compartment. these lines can easily be broken when installing a stereo or working under the hood. i guess the switch itself could be bad but that is less likely.

An easy way to tell what part of the system may have trouble is to go to the vacuum check valve and test the lines back to the mode selector and to the vacuum canister. If you have a hand held vacuum pump, it would be pretty easy. What you would want to do is remove the hoses one at a time and apply vacuum to each and see if it holds. The line to the intake manifold will have to be removed at the manifold and plugged back toward the check valve for you to test the line for leaks. You can test the check valve, too. Sometimes they are the cause of a leak.

If you find a leak on a particular hose, you will have to trace out the cause on that section.

Thanks Shoebox! One broken vacuum check down! Now I'm just back to the old stuff. If I turn on the floor vents only or the defrost vents only, it blows out of both levels....any thoughts?

Do all the modes work? You still might have a leak in one of the lines or a problem with one of the vacuum actuators.

All of the modes do work. When you switch it from any defrost or floor vents to the dash vents, it takes a few seconds unless I push the gas a little to "help it along". Another thing that might help in figureing this out is this: When I run at the track on cool nights, once or twice at least, my windshield fogged over. At WOT, the vents and everything should shut down correct? Mine blows as hard is it possibly can, and that is with the switch in the off position. The amount of force lowers with lower rpms to where it just baaaarely blows at idle.
