Clicking noise coming from front of engine

For a while now I've noticed a "clicking/ticking" noise coming from the front of my car. Today I put my car up on Rhino Ramps and crawled underneathe and I've narrowed it down to what sounds like the timing chain cover. I know it's not an exhaust leak, it doesn't have that kind of "tick" to it. It's also noticeably louder when the car is cold and in drive vs. park. I noticed a little bit of oil and dirt on the timing chain cover also, but I've never had any oil collect on the ground. Any ideas what may be causing the clicking/ticking noise in that area?

well unless your chain is about to take a dump.... i'd bet 5$ on your tensior pully.

they are easy to remove...mine lasted 113,xx miles untill it started to make a clicking noise.

best way to tell is.. get the car on ramps, turn the engine on and crawl under with a long screwdriver... and put it against your ear...listen for a clicking on the timing cover or the pulley tensioner.

Thanks for the reply. If it is the tensioner pulley, what's causing the noise? Do I just replace the pulley?

To test the tensioner theory, just remove the belt, fire it up and listen again. Obviously that will remove any other belt driven item that might be causing a noise.
