Clearance timing cover?

I have a cloyes double roller and i put the timing cover on today and the engine turns over freely and i dont here the chain scraping anywhere. Should i still put some grease inside the cover to see how close the chain is?

Thanks
Scott

Re: Clearance timing cover?

Certainly won't hurt. I had to clearance quite a bit for my comp cams double roller.

Re: Clearance timing cover?

I'm not sure about the clearance differences between a 95 cover and a 96, but I had to grind mine to get some clearance in there, and I used clay to see where I was. You can see where I ground all around the main boss even though I have Dyekem all over the place.

I took some off of mine to, it didnt hit by much but it dont take much to put metal shavings in your new motor.

Ya should clearance it. The cam has endplay and will acquire more.
Yours will be the first I have seen or heard of that didn't hit.

Re: Clearance timing cover?

I would do the grease trick to at least make sure there is clearance. There does tend to be quite a bit of variation as to how much people need to grind away and maybe yours wont require much (if any), but I would at least check it out. It is really easy and not worth risking a lot of metal shavings in the motor.

I'm about to do this too, and I thought that I was supposed to clearance around where the blue is. It seems though that you're supposed to instead clearance what's inside of thegreen is? Just want to make sure I'm doing this right. Thanks.

Can anyone verify where all it tends to hit? Just trying to make sure I'm clearnacing it right.

Did you put the gasket in between the TC and the block? I usually put some machinests die in there and put the cover on without the gasket, then turn the motor over some and clearance where it leaves marks. You could also use a big Sharpie to color the inside of the cover (as long as it's oil free).

It usually hits around the opti seal area.

One more thing I checked your site on your car... you might want to change out the hardened pushrods to real 1 piece 4130 pieces.

on mine the only place that rubbed was around the opti as you can see in the pic above that i posted and marked in green in seawolf06's pic, I did mine without a gasket everything cleared with no gasket the way I did mine so when i put the gasket in there I know ill be good.

I've been using no gasket, and grease. I think I finally got it all cut out. Although I didnt grind right around the opening for the opti, most of mine was done where the chain is. Basically taking out the plateau around the outside of the opti hole. Here is a image of where I have ground. Is this where it usually rubs? I didnt think it was hitting closer to the opti whole...

PS I replaced the $30 comp pushrods with Comp Magnum series.
