Cleaning opti

I am gonna be changing my water pump and i figured since it was off i might as well clean out my opti. It seems to be decently working but its been through a lot of moisture and its high mileage. I was thinkin maybe itd be a good idea to take it apart, clean it out, and reseal it. Is there any good way to do this, and should iattempt it. Please give me specific details. I saw the dissecting opti article a while back and am about to look it up.

Re: Cleaning opti

maybe a cap & rotor kit wouldn't hurt...as far as cleaning, be carefull, dont use carb or brake parts cleaner as they could melt the optical sensors (plastic) and cause them not to work.

compressed air maybe, becareful of the disc with the timing windows, its very thin you could probably damage it.

I'd just put a cap & rotor on it and be done. as far as the seals go, i've found nowhere to find the seals new.

good luck.

Re: Cleaning opti

I would change the cap and rotor as mentioned. It sounds good to clean, but in reality probably will cause more trouble than you solve. I would only use a shop vac to clear debris and otherwise leave it alone. Use the proper torx to replace the rotor I also used locktite on mine.

I 'sealed' mine as recommended on another site using RTV. It isn't a cure all, but helps the unit resist water entering the unit. Do NOT get carried away with the RTV and mainly have it on the outside of the opti. It is meant to keep water from entering from the top.

Good luck
