Best fitting LT1 headers??
Re: Best fitting LT1 headers??
I just got finished putting my RK Sports on. They are nearly identical to the Arizona speed and marine. Both of these headers are considered by many to be the next best thing to long tubes due to the 1 3/4 primaries.
They were very challenging to install, no wait make that a major PITA. I had to tweek the bolt holes and heat and bend a portion of the Y-pipe as well as modify the steering shaft to avoid pipes coming into contact.
These headers require creativity and patience but in the end its worth it. I only paid $490 shipped to the door which is a $300 plus savings over the AS&M. I have been told that the AS&M's do fit better with less tweaking.
I have heard good things about the MAC's being easy to install as well as most long tubes. The SLP's are the worst to install cause bolt access is very very bad.
It appears that long tubes are the easiest to install, just make sure the car is high enough as possible.
Bottom line the overall install is not difficult, just very time consuming and be prepared to get creative with any install. I dont think anyone makes headers that perfectly fit straight out of the box without tweaks.

Re: Best fitting LT1 headers??
I have known a couple of f-body owners that had the Kooks stainless long tubes. VERY VERY nice headers!!! THat woulod be the understatment of the century. They fit very well and welds are perfect in every way. Hands down the best header money can buy. You can get them with or without emissions and they also make a Y-pipe to connect it all the right way. Only drawback is that they are out of your price rang, unless you find a used set. Goodluck on that though! You'll spend about $950-1000 shipped with a y-pipe and hardware. Well worth it, but not if you dont have the coin to spare.
Re: Best fitting LT1 headers??
Kooks are definately worth the cash. They go on very easily, the plug clearance is great. The only hassle is the short starter bolt, but once you look at it, it's easy to figure out.

I love my Hookers!!! My headers are nice too!
My Hooker LT's seem to have AWESOME plug access, and the install is a snap! It should take you about a day in the driveway with a friend helping. Very straight foward and awesome construction of the header.

Re: Best fitting LT1 headers??
i have 94/95 style SLP's and the plug access is godawful. Looks like Pacesetters would have the best plug access. If you don't go through inspections then you should get a long tube header. Shorties and midlengths are notorious for having awful plug access (some long tubes too even) but AFAIK pacesetters look to have the best plug access.
just my opinion

Re: Best fitting LT1 headers??
I have headers and I regret that I pulled my SLP LT4 Stainless Steel exhaust manifolds off. They were port matched to my LT4 heads, extrude honed, sounded great, provided ample power (~ equal to a shorty set)...and they hold and remove more excess heat and look totally stock during smog checks.
My headers are noisy, hot, and don't have an EO number. LT4 exhaust manifolds are the best investment, but none are available for sale any longer.

Re: Best fitting LT1 headers??
IF your interested in lt's and can afford the kooks, get them, they are the best unless you have a custom set made. Next would be the pacesetters, everyone loves them and they are 400-500 cheaper than the kooks. For shorties I would go with mac's or as&m if you want spend more. I have heard bad stuff about the rk sports and slp. Hooker, bbk, edlebrock's I wouldn't buy brand new, if you get a great deal on a used set then maybe but otherwise I would stay away. I am basing this info on what other board members say. I have been researching for while becausing I am saving a grand for the kooks. I am tempted to just buy the pacesetters. Read header threads by searching, you will find out what people complain about and what they rant and rave about.
