clank noise when shifting...

well, yesterday when i was driving my camaro (had it a couple weeks now), i decided that i would finally get on it first time by myself (did it once when test driving it). The car was fine then, but when it shifted from 1st to 2nd i heard like a slight clank noise. My friend said it could just be something catching and not to worry about it, but i thought i would see what you guys think. I was thinking maybe my differential possibly.
It will only do it above 3500 when it shifts. I noticed it tonight when getting on the interstate when it shifted at just under 4k it did it very quietly.

Should I be alarmed?

[EDIT] also, both times has been when the t-tops are locked in the back, is it possibly the t-tops kind of clanking together possibly?

If it's the T-tops, then you need to secure them better. You don't want them to break. Have you checked into your U-joints? Maybe your rearend is a little sloppy.

Does it do it when you step on the gas hard?

Check out your trans mount, if its the stocker, only one side of it may be torn, causing just a slight noise. If your replacing it go with a poly mount, so much better, and it will never tear again.

I'm going to agree with the tranny mount. I've had two of the stockers go on me so far. It's pretty much a common problem. The poly mount will help but some complain about excessive vibration. Not that these cars don't vibrate as it is.

Re: clank noise when shifting...

I would have suggested the tranny mount, but when mine used to fail, it was more than a slight clunk sound. It felt like the tranny was going to rip out from underneath the car and it did it at all rpms, not just over 3k.

It's worth a check though. I would say get the whole car off of the ground and crawl around underneath it, wiggling, pulling, twisting, whatever, until you find the source.

Well, it is the tranny mount, are mounts interchangable? as in there not specific for manual or automatic?

Re: clank noise when shifting...

They should be the same. Was it just ripped and not completely separated? Mine made more than a slight clunk sound when I would rip mine out. Glad you found the problem.

BTW, you can go to Autozone and get an ES mount for less than that costs w/shipping.
