Chime in - who's had a new stock LT1 timing set fail?
Here's the only post I can recall having an issue:

Well thats enlightening isnt it? True there were only 16 responses, with one thats looks to have failed. But more telling is there were 'only 16 responses'. If I had titled it "Chime in - who's had a aftermarket LT1 timing set fail?" there would have been many more. And this does not include the thousands of stock LT1 timing chains that have served abusive owners well, until they were swapped out by their owners for whatever reason, or that are actually still serving well. Looks like my next road racing LT1 will be wearing a stock LT1 chain - I'll let you know if I have any trouble.
My buddy bought a 96 Z a few years back with 52,000 miles on it. His stock chain broke with 61,000 miles. Never figured out why. It was pretty much stock at the time. After that he put a set of heads and a cam in it.
Have any of the 10sec and under guys used a stock timing set??
ill be using a factory replacement timing chain for my cam swap. i paid 14 bucks(the lady at carquest seemed to like me, so dropped it from 40 to 14, hehe). she told me the brand was Cloyes so im damn happy with what i will be throwing in.
I replaced the stock 120K timing chain and gears with a Cloyes Double roller and a CRS EWP. I know thats not what you were looking for, but I didn't need the heavy WP drive anymore so went with what I have used on past motors (mostly gen1s)
Not to thread jack but how many of you guys that have done cam swaps have had the cam bearings down to brass? When I took my motor apart my cam bearings were down to the brass on the bottom on the front 2 bearings. But I honestly don't think my motor was that well taken care of which could have caused the bad bearings

I had a cloyes replacement(NOT A DOUBLE ROLLER) break after 400 miles, then a brand new stock replacement(GM) break after 750 miles a few years ago. Machine shop put the complete motor together and never knew why, it then got a double roller chain and never had a problem ever again.

very interesting thread. a friend of mine used a stock replacement on his 224/230 cam. I plan on doing the same thing and I was told on here earlier that using a stock chain is a stupid risk. he hasnt had any problems and i dont think i would either.
can you use a stock timing chain with an electric water pump?
