Check engine lite & Safe Mode?

With my "check engine light" on (Code PO410/Secondary Air Injection System) does the cars computer go into a "Safe Mode". Does this effect the cars performance by limiting the timing advance? Does it do anything else that would control the engines output? This is a '97 LT1 w/M6.

Nothing I have read says the computer makes any changes that degrade performance with this code.

think it just kicks the fans on.

not sure if the obd2 is the same, but climb under the car unhook the wires going to the air pump, replace the air pump fuse and it should go away.
at least that worked on mine

This recall may have something to do with it.

CHECK ENGINE LITE- STILL ON!

1. The "recall" to replace AIR pump was done 4 or 5 years ago.

2. The fuse is good and the pump is still pumping. I could feel it and hear it on start up. Also, I pulled the hose from the pump to the exhaust on one side and felt the air being pushed out.

What do I check or replace next????????????
