Check engine light? Problem??

I just drove over to my girlfriends house, about 10 minutes away. I didnt really hit it down or anything, but I noticed the check engine light came on. The car sounds fine and seems to run fine. I noticed on start up my engine revs up to 1500 rpm and then idles down to 900/1000. I have longtube headers, but never got a tune, Ive heard sometimes that the check engine light comes on, but I have had the headers in since march. Any ideas on the problem? My plugs/coolant/cat converter where replaced in July. Any ideas? It seems to run fine so I dont know if I should worry. Car has just under 100k miles.

Thanks

What year is the car? did you put o2 simms in? Could be something simple like an EGR valve. When my EGR valve was done, it set off a code, but the car ran perfect, so you never know. Get a scan tool, and pull the code, then we can help more from there.

Alrighty, where can I get a scan tool? I dont have sims, I got extensions. The car seems to be running fine. I have inspection this month anyway, so they will be able to check it then, but I guess I am just concerned if I should be driving it.

If you have an autozone nearby, they will scan the car for free. Also, do you mean a smog inspection this month? Just asking because with a code on, the car automatically fails, but yes, they would be able to tell you what code it is there as well.

Well, I should be able to get the exempt sticker here in PA, Ive driven the car about 3k miles from my last inspection. Hmmm, I am really getting sick of all these problems, time to start on the 383...at least those problems will be worth it in the end.

Re: Check engine light? Problem??

You shouldnt need O2 sims on a 94. And if you have a 94 then its OBD 1 and an autozone wont be able to check jack squat. They can only scan OBD 2. This is why i always say, a very important mod is LT1 SCANMASTER. That way, when you get a code, you dont have to pay a shop 50 or 60 dollars to scan your car, its FREE. Find out what the code is and get back to us, without the SES code, we cant help ya.

did you disconnect your air pump when you installed headers?
