Check Engine Light 93 Camaro

I have this odd problem and have been for years just never got it checked out cuz its so intermediate. Basically what happens is, I'll be driving around and all of a sudden the car car will like jump, stutter and the check engine will come on. The speedo will drop to 0 and not function, same with the RPM guage. The car will lack some power as well.

This happens every so often..then all of a sudden after many minutes of driving it will stutter again, engine light off, and guages back to normal with full power. Its so weird.

Any ideas on this one? 93Z28... I was thinking of buying a tool like here:
http://www.scangauge.com/buy/index.shtml

Because everytime I try to even take it to the shop with the light on, it will go away before I can get it to the shop. Its too hard

Thanks in advance

The light does not have to be on for codes to be checked. They will be stored. You can flash the codes on a 1993 wihout buying a code reader.

And to make sure you don't go in the wrong direction.... the ScanGauge II you linked will not work on your car. Its only for OBD-II PCM's. 93-95 are OBD-I.

hate to revive old threads, but I've tried doing the paper clip trick to flash the codes and I only get the default code 3 times. SO I'm guessing codes arnt stored or at least not on mine?

Some codes are erased if the trouble clears and a certain amount of drive cycles has passed.
