Changing valve springs and cam?
Changing valve springs and cam?
I am pretty sure i need some new valve springs b/c the GM springs have seen quite a bit of abuse over the last year, over 6500 rpms alot, and my car is down on power. I had installed the Hotcam kit wit the engine out and I am wondering how hard it would be to change valvesprings and camshaft in the car. I know it will be a peter so I just want to hear from someone who has done this recently. I am contemplating just dropping the whole engine and trans so it would be really easy to work on and I have access to a rack and all the airtools. What do you guys think? I have done a camswap in a friends car and it wasn't hard but he had the heads off too so I don't know how hard it would be to change those valvesprings. Could somebody give me some type of timeframe like hours it took to complete. I could have the engine and trans on the ground in about 4hrs. Later Clint
It might be tempting to drop it out the bottom to do the work. It depends on how much you value having lots of room to work on the engine. Cam and springs would be a breeze with the engine out of the car.
I would say most people don't drop the engine to do cam and springs (I didn't), but there are pros and cons to either way.

I would do it in car unless you have access to a lift, picker, stand, ect. Really depends on environment, tooling, ect. I don't and did mine in car. Not too bad. In car, you should be putting the new cam in by 4 hours anyway.
