Changing oil pump after blown head gasket, is priming needed?

I blew my head gaskets, had some milky oil, and I went ahead and put in a new oil pump with GM white spring. I let the pump soak in oil before installing, the car sat since Jan. Do I need to prime oil before startup?

What you did does not take the place of priming, yes you should prime.

I did this once and it worked well, pull the coil wire off and pull the two fuel injector fuses. Crank the engine over till you see some oil pressure on the gage, if you do not see movement on the needle pull the oil pressure sender unit off and look for pressure there. If you can get pressure in a timely manner then you will not need to pull the intake. I would not go cranking for extended periods of time.

Shouldn't crank for more than 15 seconds at a time and give the starter about 30 seconds to cool off between cranks...

I took my new pump apart and lubed the gears with assembly lube, worked good for me.

If everything is done correctly (meaning you expect the engine to start within 2 revolutions) and you have pre-filled the oil filter then priming is not necessary.
