Changing A/C Compressor Clutch
Changing A/C Compressor Clutch
Well My A/C comp clutch gave up the ghost and seperated from the bearing i believe. Has anyone changed this out on a Z or Trans Am and how hard is it to do?
Re: Changing A/C Compressor Clutch
I have asked around about this, locally and on the internet, and most seem to agree that you should just change out the whole compressor. There are several reasons, but the main ones are because you have to take the whole thing out anyway, and that you can risk messing up the seal in the front of the compressor and break it anyway. Up to you, but I'll be changing the whole thing out.
Re: Changing A/C Compressor Clutch
Make sure that the bearing is the problem before you start.
Take off the belt and spin the pulley, should be able to feel roughness if the bearing is bad. If you don't feel roughness check the power steering pump.
You can change this in the car, no need to remove the compressor.
You take off the belt.
Remove the nut on the compressor shaft.
Use special puller to remove the front clutch plate.
Then use a snap ring pliers to remove internal snap ring.
Pulley and bearing will then slide off the shaft.
I would sugggest buying a new pulley with the bearing already swaged into it.
Or you can buy a bearing for $20.00 and press the old one out and restake the new bearing. The staking tool is hard to find, I just used a punch, didn't do a great job but it has held so far.
Slip the new pullley over the shaft.
Install the snap ring.
Use the puller installer tool to pull the clutch plate back on the shaft, press fit, and check air gap with feeler gage.
Install nut on compressor shaft.
Replace belt.
Done.
