Change Springs with the heads still on?

Is it possible for me to change the valve springs and keep the heads on the engine still?

I want to do the 1.6RR's and keep my stock cam this year.
but thinking if I have to take the heads off I might as well jsut do the cam too.

Well it seems possible. Might have to hook a compressor up to the spark plug hole to create pressure to hold the valves up. Haven't change RR yet but want to. Hopefully someone will know for sure

Yes you can do it.

IMO it's much less of a PITA to just take off the heads....but that's me.

but then I got gaskets and bolts.
at that point its only a couple more gaskets for the cam

and I'm trying not to spend money this year

Yes you can do it. Most are pretty easy except for 6/7/8 bcause they are stuck under the cowl.

You can rent a tool for free from autoZone. Its pretty crappy, but works ok for being free.

You either need to have compressed air to keep valves open, or turb the engine over by hand and allow the pistons to keep the valves up.

OR (and i dont suggest this) you can do it like i did.

Took off old springs and grabbed valve. Kinda pulled up on it, twisting it at same time, seating it in the valve seat. It will stick there. You can then put on the spring CAREFULLY not to bump the valve. If one of them dropped, i would have been stuck pulling the head, but thats the route i chose. I felt confident enough that i seated them in the carbon buildup and didnt have any fall down, but had a few close calls and bumps.

Ok, so if the piston is up then it wont be able ot completely fall in?

I think I might try the air idea, we have a compressor, and I assume the tool is something that scews into the sparkplug hole and jsut uses the air pressure.
I'll do that with the headers off, should give a bit more room.

But there is enough room to get in there and do everything right?

Yup the air fitting just pumps air into the cyl via the spark plug hole and keeps the valves up.

The tool i mentioned was just a screw type spring compressor which is rentable. Not sure where you would find the fitting to screw into spark plug holes.

OR if the piston is at TDC, the valve will hit it and not fall in.

100% sure there is enough room to do them heads on the car. Thats how i did mine
