Change hub to run cloyes dbl roller on 97 LT1??

I have searched all over but have not found a difinitive opinion on this.

If I am going to be running a cloyes double roller timing chain and electric water pump on my 97 LT1, will I need to change the crank hub or can I use the stock one that came off the engine?

As others have noted, I will be removing the crank position sensor reluctor and having it programmed out along with other required tuning. I am aware of all the cover clearancing, WP drive hole sealing, etc.

Is there anything special about installing the hub in this configuration?

Thanks for the info.

Measure the difference between the combination of your old crank gear and reluctor vs. the Cloyes gear. Shim between the gear and the hub as necessary to make up the difference, so you can use your existing hub.

Unless you shim it for the difference, you cannot reuse your hub. The 96/97 hub is most definitely shorter. Put that on w/o shimming it and you will be throwing belts.

I just purchased a used hub off a 93-95 car off of here for cheap when I did my conversion.

This is good info here but i have some additional questions.

What if a i wanted to keep the crank sensor and ring will this timing chain still work or am i limited to still use the LT4 timing kit?

I did it one time and kept the reluctor wheel...just for a spacer....

BTW ATI sells a hardened machined shim if you take it out....I have used those also

Cloyes sells one specifically to work with your optical crank postion sensor. Give them a call.

I just ground the reluctor ring into a washer type spacer but it seemed my timing cover needed more clearence work than people make it out to be. Just take your time and you should be ok.

If I keep reluctor, can I keep a functioning CPS?

So if I am able to use the reluctor wheel as a spacer to locate my exixting 97 hub correctly on the crank snout, does that mean I can keep a funcioning crank position sensor or do I still have to have that feature programmed out by the folks at PCMforless? I though I had to get rid of the CPS as soon as I switched to the Cloyes double roller chain setup?

If I am able to keep the reluctor wheel and use it as a spacer, that would seem to mean that the crank sprocket for the double roller is the same thickness as the crank sprocket from the original setup. Am I understanding correctly?

Thanks for all the responses.

For a whole lot of money. I think they're in the $400 range if I'm not mistaken.

I don't think the spacer will line up with the sensor enough for it to work. Just get a hub off a OBDI type LT1 and be done with it. They can be had for dirt cheap.

Agreed. The CPS is pretty much worthless when putting a cam in the car anyways, it is constantly detecting false misfires due to cam lope.

BTW... why are you going with a double roller?

I have this one in mine and it was about $90 from Summit. It works with both optical trigger and standard.

I believe this is the p/n - CLO-9-3157. It's for 96-02 Gen 1 Vortec truck engines. Call Cloyes to verify.

Not to confuse anyone but i heard you cannot use the crank sensor with the double roller timing chain because the actual sensor would interfere with the sensor it's self.

I personally would like to keep it in thats why i asked if i could use the double roller with the sensor & ring.

The CPS is USELESS with a loping cam. It will detect false misfires.
