Ceramic coating on ypipe Gone!

Has anyone had this happen to their Hooker ceramic coated Y-pipe?The headers are fine but the ypipe coating is gone. They have been on the car since last May!

Is there anything I can do?Or do I have to just live with it?

You could wrap it with header wrap, but if you scrape the Y at all then thats probably going to come off too.

Welcome to the reality of the false promises of everlasting ceramic coating. I had a set of new Edel headers on a BBC engine done by Paul Barry. The coating lasted about 6 months before I got surface rust showing through all over. I've had VHT paint last that long!

That's because those coatings are mainly for cosmetics and some rust prevention. The JetHot 2000 degree ceramic coating is much tougher and isn't aluminum based like the sterling silver finishes. If you want a really functional coating, then go look at Swain. Swain's coating is .015" - .020" thick and is pearl white in color. As an indicator how thick their coating is, the aluminum based sterling silver coating is approximately .003" thick, and the JetHot 2000 ceramic finish is around .005".

My next set of headers are going to be coated by Swain.

Don97,

I'm in the same boat as you, my set of MACs were coated by Paul Barry, and within 1 year they were rusting significantly. I will mention the car has been driven in the winter which doesnt help, but I would have thought it would have lasted better than galvanizing or aluminizing. They seem to be rusting at the same rate as my flowmaster did.
The state that the headers are in right now, (3 years later), I shouldn't have even bothered with the coating. I'm in the process of taking them off and getting JETHOT to redo them... The car is never going to be driven during the winter again, hopefully jethots quality will live up to expectations.

My ypipe coating doesnt look brand new but its not falling off. It looks like it was prepped poorly if at at all before it coated. I would take them back and ask them to redo them . By the way...Paul never coated anything, he was just a middle man.

My JetHot coated MAC headers are not peeling but they are starting to get surface rust. The downpipe from the driver's side looks like it is coated in mud it is so dirty.

O.k. does this Swain have a website or phone number that you could share?
