When I poured the water into the runner it began to seep out around the valve. It didn't start right away but within say 20-30sec the valve had some water begin to dribble out but it was just a very small amount. It wasn't a steady stream or anything.

Is this normal? I was thinking it was not the norm. If it can't hold water in then I would think it couldn't hold gasses out??

well im not sure how much leakage is appropriate, but if it was air tight what would be the purpose of a leakdown test?

 

are the springs on the valves? if not then the valve may not be completely closed without the spring pressure there. if the springs are on id say there is something wrong.

 

A hand lap should fix that.

 

put a little grease around the seat. the difference in cc's won't be a big deal

 

I agree.

There was a time that most valves were lapped in.

When I got my AFR heads and did a leak-down test, I could hear a slight hissing at the valves.
I called AFR and asked them about it and they told me that hand lapping would create a perfect seal, but the trouble is there will always be some residue of the lapping compound left -- no matter how well you clean it.
They said it is normal today not to lap the valves. The valves are supposedly sealed well enough.
