You won't need to port your heads, I've read that this cam is one of the best cams for stock heads. Yes I would recommend getting a 3000+ stall to use the cam to its full potential. Remember you will have to get a tune for the new cam

Re: cc503 setup?

Ported heads are not needed. I would go with a 3200 edge racing stall; I am using this stall and it is near unnoticeable until you give it the throttle, Yank is supposed to be better but for the price I went with the edge. I would also do 1.6 NSA comp promag rockers, with guide plates and hardened pushrods along with valve springs that will support the cc503 cam; I would also install a new timing set while you have it all apart. You defiantly should do the stall; a cam with no stall will be slower than the same car with the stall and stock cam. Be sure to be as clean as possible during the install, it's important that you be careful removing and installing the new cam. Be sure to have it tuned; pcmforless.com is who I used for my 11:7:1 355, they got it right on.

Re: cc503 setup?

+1 on all of the above. If you go with a little less cam then a stall is not required and would still wake up the car. On any cam, required items are (at least in my mind):

springs
pushrods
rockers
gaskets/seals/bearings

Comp or ARP rocker studs are a good investment at $35-45

I've got some 1.52RR Comp roller tip rockers for sale, barely used if you need them. Part # 1417-16

Re: cc503 setup?

Ok so first off its the 3000 or 3200 stall from edge racing, 1.6 nsa comp pro mags rockers/1.52RR Comp roller tip rockers . (will definitely google what it does).lol.guide plates , hardened pushrods , and valve springs. I know im going to sound dumb but would you be able to find out the exact specifications of all those things i mentioned? Im trying to learn what each thing does and how it helps. I guess im asking for a easy no brainer setup that wouldnt be up to my taste but it would be good for right now?. pcmforless i have heard about them but i should worry about them after i get everything on the car right?

Re: cc503 setup?

Also with the stall you should install a trans cooler; I run my trans fluid to the radiator then out of the radiator and into the trans cooler and finally back to the trans. These are the push rods http://www.trickflow.com/partdetail....0&autoview=sku 7.2" length. The pushrods, guide plates and rockers make for a more stable valve train at higher rpms; the motor will pull more rpms with the new cam, the 1.6 ratio rocker arms increase the lift and duration of the cam. You should not drive the car around before having the pcm tuned; you can do it, but I would not run the car on the stock tune. Do not go with any stall less than a 3200 and do not buy one of those cheap stalls, stick with edge racing or yank; if you go with yank the ss 3200/3600 is what you want. I have a modified street edge 3200 converter and I would not hesitate to buy from Andre again.

This will be the way to go for these things, comp will set you up with the right valve train parts; the trick flow push rods are the same as comps chrome moly rods only less $$. After you have all of your parts ordered then you can contact pcmforless.com and they will help you out with everything you will need to fill out for the tune. Don't let anyone talk you into anything smaller then a 3200 stall, don't go with any less quality than the edge racing, and don't forget a trans cooler; when you order your stall call the order in and talk to someone about your order they will tell you what trans cooler to run. I could give you Andre; the owner of edge racing, phone number. Everyone told me my 3200 would be way too bid, but it feels darn near stock until I floor it; then its hold on tight. You will need some good tires out back or you will just burn them all day long; I just upgraded to nitto 555r 315s.

Re: cc503 setup?

i have a question about the setup here.. i contacted comp regarding the recommended timing set 3206 as its not available and they recommended timing set number 3207 which costs more than $500 ,
could i just reuse the stock timing set i have rather than buying it as i need to keep the cost down..

also what stock parts can i reuse?

Re: cc503 setup?

Yes you can use a stock timing set. Depending on mileage you might replace the chain with new stock pieces.

People love to hate the stock timing set but fact is it is very reliable and works well. Have to consider it was designed to turn the waterpump too so it is pretty robust.

Re: cc503 setup?

That saves me $500 , my engine has around 1500 miles on it now...

What other parts can I stick with?

Re: cc503 setup?

why are you recommending a 3200 stall converter if the cam requires a 2000 converter?

which would be better for a DD?

Re: cc503 setup?

A 2000 stall is a joke, hardly better than stock. A higher stall like a 3200+ is definitely the way to go, even for a DD. I have a 4000 stall in my car and wouldn't hesitate to DD it.

Re: cc503 setup?

If you buy a quality 9.5" converter even the most picky folks are usually good with 28-3200 stall. Even a friend's WIFE daily drives a cammed Caprice with 3200stall here in Wisconsin meaning snow and all.

I like Edge but would also recommend Yank and Vigilante as very good options too, those two cost more due to billet covers which are stronger but few of us need the billet cover strength.
