CC502 or CC503 - lope
CC502 or CC503 - lope
I'm prefer a smoother cam versus a choppy cam. The overlap is about 48 on the CC502 and 54 on the CC503.
This will be going into a 383 which is supposed to tame the lope a bit.
Since I haven't heard these cams in person, how choppy is the lope?
Thanks.

With the 503 in a 350, 725rpm = nice lope, 900 = negligible lope. In a 383, you could probably choose either and be good - it will just depend on the rpm you idle. If you want "smooth" then choose the 502 IMHO.
Thanks for the input. I think I'll go with the CC503 in my 383. If I was sticking to a 350 I'd go with a CC502. I wish I could listen to sound bytes of various cams... that would be great!
Boy, he must have it idling pretty high then because my 503 installed at 108 ICL loped WAY more than the duration numbers would suggest - of course, this was again at 725.
Get a stock exhaust!!!! My car lopes like a **** through the cutout, and then through the stock exhaust, WTF, where's the lope? But is there any reason you went with the 502/503 as supposed to something a little bit bigger? That cam is pretty small for a 350, and is tiny for a 383. Either way whatever route your taking with the car/motor, good luck!
In Kalifornia, we have to worry about the smog police. Senator Boxer has vowed to fight to reduce CO2 emissions... the better a car runs, the higher the CO2. With more cars in operation on the road, there will be more CO2 based on fossil fuel. This means they will be having photo sniffers on highway onramps. These will photo your vehicle while sampling the air from your exhaust as you drive by... if you're at WOT and in open loop, you'll be reported to a smog referee to run a check.
I've heard of the CC502 passing smog in Kalifornia with a good tune. Increasing to a 383 will increase my displacement by 9%. The CC502 has about 48.5 overlap and the CC503 has about 54.5 overlap which is also about 9%. So, in proportion, I should still be within smog limits.
I can't have a lope for smog purposes.
I just had a smog check about 5 months ago and I almost got sent to a smog referee. The smog tech saw my GM Performance Parts Cold Air Induction (with CARB EO sticker on Radiator Shield). He said it was a custom built engine and he wouldn't smog it. He was afraid I was an undercover trying to see I could catch him... he still swears I'm undercover...LOL. So, after 30 minutes of debate, going onto the GM Perf Parts website, SLP website, talking with the manager, having the manager and technician discuss while I show them the sticker, and calling SLP to verify over the phone... I finally got my smog check and it passed. So, if there is a lope, these smog technicians will go crazy!

Check this web site out.

The 305 cam listed is actually a 503. Look at the duration numbers and LSA listed. These are for the 503 cam.

Maybe it's the sound quality but it does have a good lope. As much as I like it, the cam won't pass "sound" in Kalifornia. The smog people will definately hear that... but maybe the lope can be tamed by putting the idle at 1000 RPM.
On this website, it sounds relatively smooth...
