cc306 normal or do i have a problem?
My 383 lt1 seems to surge at low rpms, under 2000rpms, is this normal with a cc306? car runs great, and you dont notice the surge unless your locked up in overdrive, or just hold the car at a steady rpm you can see the tach go up and down small amounts.
I also have a small ticking sound that i cant get ride of, my old motor made the same sound, after i put a cam in it, well i just built the 383 and it makes a small ticking sound like lose rocker arm,but isnt rockers, sounds like coming from the middle of the engine, someone told me its probibly the cam because it has a larger ramp rate you get some lifter noise?
its all in the tuning to a point.....but a 306 grind is definately not made for a 383 or low rpm. typically, the best numbers on a 306 grind come from smaller cube high rev engines. I drove a 383 lt1 306 cammed 6 speed, and then i drove a 306 cammed 350 lt1 with gtp stage 3 heads and you would not believe the difference. it was amazing and it seemed to be in it's comfort zone at all times. (automatic car with 3200 stall and 3.73's). I've seen them used in 383's a lot and they work fine, but there's a lot more to be found out of your 383 with a custom grind cam or a better matched shelf cam. After getting a couple, i swear on custom grinds...for the little extra cost, you cannot go wrong. contact bret bauer
get it tuned...i have a CC306 in my 396 no can surge at all...a freind of mine built a 383 lt1 with a 254/262duration, 106LSA, 626,626 lift and after a good tune there was no cam surge. before the car was tuned it surged all the time at low RPM's....
when people talk about driveability of cams, this is what they are reffering to mainly. The surge you are referring to is called cam surge, and can be tuned out but takes some definite effort to get completely rid of it.
