cc306 correct dowel pin

I was wondering how I can tell if I have the correct dowel pin in the cam for my car? I just bought the cam and saw a pic of another camshaft and the pin looks longer on the pic than the one on my cam. If it is the wrong one can I switch it out to the correct one?

Shoebox's website lists the proper length. Mine was fine out of the box, other have had to cut it down a swap them.

Be sure its not too long; a few years ago when doing a cam swap, I installed the cam without checking (it looked to be about right) and it destroyed the Opti in a matter of days.

I had to trim my Comp SR cam dowel pin also for my `95 LT1. It was too long from Comp. If I remember , I cut somewhere around .200" off.

Thanks for the replies. The pin in my cam looks like the shorter one. I bought this cam used and I believe that it was in a 97 LT1. I will ck the length.

I used a grinder to get it close, then a file.

I was under the impression that the longer one was for the vented opti

Mine was the vented opti, but the dowel was still too long...I'd check any cam from now on, it was an expensive and aggravating mistake to make.

I ordered a comp cams cam for my 95 and it came with a pin approximately .3 which is probably the correct length for a non-vented opti. Therefore measure the pin length to make sure it's not too short too.

In the pic above, the shorter pin is the correct length for a vented opti. The long pin will destroy it.
