CC305, 1.7s and comp 985 valvesprings?

I have a CC305, Comp 985 valvesprings with retainers and locks. I am sure that these valvesprings will work with 1.5 lift, but what about 1.6 or 1.7? I have asked before, but never got a definitive answer on how to determine if a valvespring is sufficient for a certain amount of lift. I know the equation, but besides test fitting the valvesprings to see what the installed height is, is there any way to have an "idea" at least if it is going to work? Also, does anyone know if the 985s require head machining to fit? Do I need locators, or seats, or whatnot? I guess there has just been too much misinformation on valvetrain for me to know what to believe and what not to. Thanks!
