To my knowledge ALL aftermarket cats are not emissions legal. But I could be mistaken.

Well, you got it pretty tough to upgrade to anything. Since you are a 97, you have dual cats. One normal looking cat, and one really messed up looking one that is basically in the engine compartment. So, you have 3 choices(maybe more, but these seem like the most logical). You can gut your cats, or put ORP's in their place. Will remove all restriction from your flow, but will make the exhaust louder, and some say raspier. Downside is that they are not emissions legal. 2nd choice is to buy some new headers, like AS&M single cat conversion headers, or FLP headers which come with new cats. However, that is extremely expensive. Third choice, which isnt much cheaper, is to do a true dual system, using OBD-II legal cats at some point in the system. However, this becomes rather expensive also, plus, you usually lose some ground clearance with true duals. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
