CAT or transmission. is one going out?

how did you know? im trying to determine if this is my problem.

it feels completely bogged down. the engine is running fine, it just feels like it cant apply the power to the pavement. i also have wreched gas mileage and i am starting to overheat (may not be related). it feels like it has to struggle to get the rpms for the tranny to shift. like its being held back a ton. although, my tranny is my other guess. what do you think?

93 trans am A4, 67k

If you're getting bad gas mileage, then the motor probably isn't running as good as you think.

Since you don't really seem to have any kind of concrete evidence, start at square one. When was the last time you did a tune up? Air filter, fuel filter, plugs, wires, etc...

As far as the gas mileage, old O2 sensors will contribute to that, but if you need a tune up, that would do it too.

i was hoping i wouldnt get a reply like this. lol

ive replaced or tried everything. name it, ive done it.

i also used a scanner which told me that the engine itself is working the way it should.

Then maybe you should have relayed some of that info in your original post.

If you think it's the cat, I'd drop the exhaust and determine the effect on the problem.

yeah, i know. sorry, my bad. i only had a second to post.

im trying to choose one of the other. only because for what ever reason, my cat is welded and will be a hassle to get off. i just want to make sure its one or the other.

anyone have any symptoms?

All you can do is diagnose before you do something. Perhaps a list of what you have done and wht the symptoms have been will allow us to provide better feedback.

here is a link to my previous thread.
http://web.camaross.com/forums/showt...threadid=91073

since then, i have checked the fuel pump relay, cleaned the MAP sensor, cleaned the evap valve and had the car scanned and ran it with it connected. no codes thrown and everything is where it should be. this tells me its not my motor. the cat and tranny are my last guesses. i have been leaking oil for some time and i think its my intake manifold gasket but could it cause something this major? im gonna do that anyhow this weekend. as mentioned in my linked thread, i bottomed out my cat on a pothole and since then right off the start, i will get a surge when i first put on the gas. i also have trouble starting sometimes, like its struggling to get the exhaust out or something. thats why i was thinkin it could be my cat. as far as the tranny goes, i guess its operating correctly but ive been told many times that it could be that.

thanks for any feedback i get.

Do they have emissions in PA? Just unbolt the CAT and gut it. If you run with it gutted and everything is good, you've found your problem. And you have to run emissions legal, just buy a new one. You can get a Catco for like 60 bucks from Summit.

yeah, they have emissions. Thats exactly what i wanted to try but the cat is welded in the front. I wanted to see if i could narrow it down more.

i started to take off the manifold to fix the leak and i looked inside once the throttle body was off. it was completely black. i had to scrape it off to see the real color of it. my guess is because the leak has been there for a while. i dont know if its related or not but i just thought id post it.
