Cat options
Cat options
My stock cats are rattling and making noise, (96 z28), anybody know what the best way to go with the cats...should I have no cats, high flow cats, etc. Only thing is i want the SES light to stay off..any ideas?
Re: Cat options
If i would you i would take the following into consideration
1 Do you plan on selling the car or having to have it go thro inspection any time soon?
2 What are the emisions test like where you live, do they have a visual inspection, exhaust test or like here in MD just plug into the computer.
3How much do you want to spend?
answer those and ppl here can help ya alot more

Re: Cat options
GO with no cats for now....eventaully when you modify your exhaust, you can go with hi-flos or ORY.... That way you aren't cutting old cats out of stock exhaust and placing them in new one, etc if you want cats -- you can purchase Y - pipes w/ cats, or have a shop weld somce nice new ones in since the rest of ur exhaust will be new. Or, just go without cats till you want them or emission tells you that you want them
Either way, just some things to think about. For me the biggest issue was cost.
EDIT: With OBDII, you are simply plugged into a computer @ emissions. No codes = no fail. No cats will throw a code and you will need it either programmed out or purchase O2 sims for the rear O2s... if you are doing any other mods soon, go with the tune AFTER those mods (if being done before emissions). If you don't mind the SES light for a while till the tune, thats the way to go - otherwise buy the O2 sims... Tune can cost $125, $50 after that...... So only worth $125 if you paln on getting tunes after with other mods. Otherwise, you'll save just buying O2 sims...

Re: Cat options
i dont plan on selling it anytime soon at all, for inspection and emissions i really dont have to worry about..and im really not looking to spend to much..money is pretty short my way..lol...i already have a hooker catback installed and i have bbk shortie headers ready to go on...
Re: Cat options
OK - then definitely lose them - don't buy O2 sims. After all your mods are in, just get a tune. Ion at madz28.com tuned my PCM. If you don't feel it's worth it after only shorties, then you can hold off - but gains are proven on even stock cars (if you run 91+ octane). Once again, depending on what other near future mods there are (gears, etc) will decide when is best for you to get a tune..
