Carrier???

I tried this in the drive-train forum, but wasnt getting much luck. So, here goes nothing.

Ok, my carrier in my car is getting pretty bad. Pretty bad meaning in one tire fire. Well, my cousin gave me a carrier out of a truck that he said he thinks is for a 7.5" rearend. Now, I picked it up the other day and it is brand new, and it is an auburn "style" carrier. But it doesnt have the springs on the inside, just gears, like a slp carrier. How can I tell if this would work in my car and how do I tell what series carrier it is? The only thing the looks odd, is that it has little fins (cooling or something) on the opposite side of where the ring gear bolts to. The side that you would have to look at to take the ring gear bolts out. Mine doesnt have those, so what can I do??

what gears are on them? count the teeth and then divide the ring gear teeth by the pinion teeth and that sould help.. If they are 2.73's they will be a 2 series carrier, if they are anything higher then they are a 3 series carrier...

Actually 3.08 gears and HIGHER are a 2 series carrier. Your getting your numbers mixed with the wierdness of gear ratios. But, he got the carrier without gears on it, and he bolted a 3.08 ring gear to it. It is still on there, but I dont know if the gears for a 2 series carrier will bolt onto the a 3 series carrier. There has to be someway to find out by looking at it.
