Carbon on pistons...clean it off or leave it?
There is a light coating of carbon, looks like normal, cant imagine it could be better after 95k. Should I take a wire wheel and get it off or dont even worry about it since it will come right back?
I clean mine up a bit whenever I pull the heads. I just use some heavy duty carb cleaner and a rag though. I would advise against using anything like a scotchbrite pad, sandpaper, or even a wire brush. You don't want anything in the cylinder that could scuff a wall.
Yes, it does start to accumulate again. I've never had a real thick buildup but it doesn't take much effort to clean the pistons. If there are any thick accumulations you might want to try taking a razor scraper to slice the gunk off. I blow the cylinder out with air when I'm done. I do this right before putting the heads back on. It certainly isn't necessary but since it doesn't take me long, I'd much rather have it clean.
If you use a mechanical method to remove carbon, have your shop vac running with the hose right there to suck up any particles that come loose. Do not gouge the tops of the pistons with anything. Any nicks or gouges could become hot spots during combustion and cause detonation problems.
