Car won't start. What to check.
Car won't start. What to check.
My car "overheated" several times these past 2 days. Of course when I say it overheated I mean it started to creep over the 210 mark and I shut it off.
Fans weren't kicking on. So today I replaced the fan switch on the front right of the water pump. I removed all the intake pipes, and unhooked everything attached to it.
I hooked the new switch, plugged it in. Put "Everything" back on, and started the car up. I got out of the drive way and up to autozone as I pulled out my car almost died. I got to autozone, only to realize I had left the MAF unhooked. So I plugged it in, and started the car back up and it kinda ran ****y and the service engine soon light came on. I drove to Orielys to return a part, and got back in my car. It took some cranking to get it started, and I got it home. (this is a 1 and 1/2 mile radius). Got the car home, shut it off. Went inside, came back out.
Tried to turn on the car, nothing. It makes the noise like it wants to start but won't. At one point, I turned the key a second after I stoped turning and it made the sound when you turn key while its actually on.
So I can't get it started. I cranked it a few more times and could smell gas. Checked fuel lines, and they were fine.
Any suggestions? My friend at said I probably left something unplugged related to the ignition. I've given a visual inspection but I can't see anything unplugged.

Re: Car won't start. What to check.
reset the pcm by pulling the pcm fuse in the fuse panel to the left of the steering wheel. (With the car off). After a minute, plug it back in, see how it runs.
Next, turn the car to the "On" position. Do you hear the fuel pump power on? If not, pull the drivers side kick panel, and locate the relay. Pull it out of it's cover until you can see the copper bent wire. Turn the car "On", and squeeze the relay so the contacts in it touch. This will give the same effect as turning the car on, only the relay only does it for a second. This will let you run the pump as long as you want. If it doesn't power on with the relay closed, you can replace the relay, or assume the pump is bad.
Also, when you pull off the kick panel, to the left of the seat, there is a loom of wires. Two of which run straight to the fuel pump. Black and black/white I believe they are. You can use an exacto knife to splice them a little, and run power to them from a 9 volt battery or something. If it doesn't power on, the fuel pump is dead.
Could also be your opti-spark.
Good luck.

Re: Car won't start. What to check.
Thanks for the post, however I don't believe any of these issues apply to me. Incidently I already reset the PCM using that method prior to your post, it didn't make a difference. And I can hear the fuel pump come on.
I don't see how the opti could have died that quickly, as it had been working prior to me working on the car. Like within the hour.
I imagine I left something related to the ignition unplugged by accident. That huge intake resonator did pose a problem getting out, perhaps I unplugged something by mistake.
I am surprised no one has taken a stab at this, it seems fairly basic things to check.
