car wont start

Well, the Z28 took a dip again, it wont start, and whe you try to crank her up and makes this unsightly sound, dad describes it as metal grinding against metal, so i know what it is, the flywheel is disconnected from the starter (automatic transmission). The first time this happened, the car belonged to dad so he had it towed off and fixed at the mechanic, and they only charged like $60 so i know its not that hard of a job if they charge soo little, now this time the car is mine and i'm mechanically inclined, but i'm used to working on a mitsubishi and not a chevy, so if anyone could help out on what to do on fixing this problem would be very appreciated. Thanks

Pull the starter. You will probably have to disconnect the exhaust to get it down. Don't forget to disconnect the battery and the starter wire. check the gears on the starter and the flywheel. When ever you replace the starter check the clearance between the gears by placing the tooth of one gear in the valley between the teeth of the other gear. This should be in a straight line between the starter and the flywheel. Use a paperclip to check the gap.

Consider a new starter and or heat wrap.
