car wont run right after cam swap "help please!!"

hey guys, i finished up my car last night after doing a lt4 hotcam kit install and i went to crank my car up and it fired.. 0nce the car fired up it immediately went to 2000 rpm and stayed there for about 10 sec and then the rpm's just dropped off and the car died. I tried to start the car back up and it fired again and immediately died. to make the car run you have to keep your foot on the gas and even doing that the car is just missing badly and shaking the car. I am stumped, went back and checked all my wires and vaccum lines and such and they are all hooked up. What do you guys think i should look at?!?! thanks for your help in advance!

Sounds like the timing is off. Are you positive that you put the opti on correct, and your crank and cam gear are aligned as follows?

well that sucks.. my timing is 180 off and that would cause my car to run real rough wouldnt it? my crank gear dot was up and my cam gear dot was up..

Time to pull that cover.

Also, if it runs ****ty after you fix it, check the compression. If it ran for too long with the timing that off, it's possible you may have bent some valves.

yeah well that sounds about right. i did not let the motor run long so do you think its possible that i did not bend anything internal in the motor like my valves ect ect.?

there is only one way to install the opti right? it seems to me that the timing could be off because the motor is running so rough. When i first started it up the motor went to 2000 rpm and stayed there for about 10 sec and then the rpm's just started pulsing up and down untill it reached about 900 and then the car just died.

sounds to me like you have a massive vacuum leak, but you have speed density and i know practically nothing about them

If the timing is OK, plugs and wires are good, I would be thinking bent valve.

If the car won't idle you have no way of getting a vacuum gauge reading.

Check your compression on all 8 cylinders.

Next time you install gears, do it with #6 @ tdc, it's better because you can see that the dots are pointing right at each other. I doubt being off a tooth would cause the car to not run at all, so if you're not 180 out, I don't think your timing is off.

180 out

i installed a opti yesterday on a 97, and yes i marked everything when pulling it apart. but when i installed the new opti i still got it 180 out and it wouldnt even crank. it would turn over a few times and catch. so i had to pull everything back apart and reset everything, after a few attempts i finally got it so i dont think your 180 out or it wouldnt crank at all. it may still be off but not 180.

in order to put your opti on 180 out you need to seriously force it there, it only fits in one spot
