Car stays running after key removal

I have another thread about my security light being on. I just went for gas and shut the car off and pulled key but the car kept running like normal. I had an old firebird that would diesel after being shut off, but this was different. I got it home and had to wiggle the key a bunch then it shut off. Started it again, same thing. It even revs normal with the key removed. I scanned the pcm and have code 26, evap purge electrical.

What would cause this and does it have anything to do with why the security light is on?

If you haven't been messing with the wiring then you may need to replace the ignition cylinder.

Similar advice as I gave Timelord yesterday (can't believe you have not thought of it, since you replied in that thread). Check ignition switch for proper operation or adjustment.

The switch can cause it to not shut off?

The switch is what powers everything that makes the engine run. It can't run by itself.

I'm just going to replace both the switch and cylinder.they aren't expensive and I just feel better doing that.

Rob, do you remember me talking to you about my high beam switch before? Once I open up the column, should I see why it doesn't work?

The high beam switch is right there on top of the ignition switch. You can easily check it while there. There even might be a possibility that the screws are loose that hold them both on. That could possibly explain your ignition switch problem [adjustment], too.

Do I only need the steering wheel puller or do I also need a lock plate puller?

I have not done an ignition cylinder, but you will probably also need a lock plate tool.

I will just try the switch first to see if that's the problem. I'm return the cylinder then if so.

Re: Car stays running after key removal

I got the column out and when I turn the key to the positions it seems to work. both switches are tight so thats not what was wrong. I can't see what's wrong with the high beam switch.

This is what I see behind the turn signal lever.

There is nothing there that the lever would hit to turn the high beams on.

Re: Car stays running after key removal

Is the column in a camaro exactly the same as a TA? Except for the wheel and the tilt lever?

I see the rod right there that whatever part I'm missing pushes in. I'm trying to figure out what is supposed to be there.

This should be my problem on the car running with the key out. If this would even allow it to start.that is grease on the wires.

Would number 44 be what pushes on the rod?

Re: Car stays running after key removal

The reason you are probably not getting much response is that not a lot of people have dug into the column and know what they are seeing in your pics. I haven't been in there, myself and the exploded views are often hard to distinguish just what the operational relationships are. I can't imagine something is missing, unless someone had been inside the column before you.

The broken wire on your cylinder is definitely your VATS issue. Solder and heatshrink the wire back together and re-test/install.
