Car started up, then died right away... battery?

Some quick back history...

My current battery is at least 3 years old, has been drained about 3 times by fan switch at the track during cool downs (oops), and about three weeks ago was drained completely by my wife accidentally leaving the headlights on for an hour. All those times though, the car would just do the typical "clicking" associated with a dead battery.

Today I took out my car for the first time in about 8 days (after this hurricane mess here in Florida) and it started right up out of the garage. I went to run an errand and got back in my car. It started up (sorta) then died right away. I tried this a few more times trying to get it to stay rev'd up, but no luck.

Finally after about 5 minutes and several attempts I got the car started and held the RPM's at about 3k rpm or so for a minute. The car stayed on once I let off and I figured I was ok to get home.

The charge meter reads right at 13V at idle, and about 13.2 while cruising.

Could my battery just be calling it quits? Just checking before I just go out and buy a new one real quick Never really had one go out like this.

*edit* I just let my car sit for about 10 minutes and it started right back up. hmmm....

IF it cranks fine then your battery is OK. Sounds like the same problem I am having with the wife's car right now. I have narrowed it down to pretty much just the opti.

Christ.. just what I needed right now..

Two hurricanes, a new roof, a blown motor in my jet ski, and an opti.

Not necessarily the same problem in your case. I would check the IAT also. If it goes out, the engine will give you lots of problems. IF you have a friend with Datamaster, have them hook it up for you.

Thanks guys, I'll check whatever I can test here

Any hints on how to check the two items mentioned with a voltmeter or anything?

Just went out after leaving the car sit for about 30 minutes.

Starts up fine, idles fine, runs fine. Don't really think it's the opti.

Maybe the battery was just low on charge from sitting for a week and after running around town for a bit its charged back up... I'll probably just replace it anyways so I can avoid this problem again.

With all the humidity after the storms alot of vehicles are having problems. But if it wont start again just unplug the maf. A 3 year old batt since your car sits at time needs to be change out to a optima or some dry cell and/or dissconect the bat if it sits more than a few days.

yeah, low fuel press. will not let you raise the rpm sometimes if really low. and ofcourse make it stall/not start. then, after a while, might work again at a high enough press. to drive till it finally dies. check fuel press.

Ignition switch...

Go out and start your car, but do not let the tumbler roll all the way back, if it stays on while you are holding the tumbler a little forward of the run possition that is your problem.

My volts were low and my alternator was fine and my battery was dead. I changed the battery and the same nite my car died. Before i had this problem where it would start right up and then just die. When i started it up and i gave it gas it would idle funny but soon as i stopped it would die but on the third time it always started right up. It didn't do this all the time it was an off and on problem. Turned out it was my igniton switch....now my volts are back up and i haven't had that problem since. But when my ignition switch went i had power everything but when i turned the key the fuel pump wouldn't come on and neither would the radio and i couldn't roll up my windows but i had full power throughout the car. I think the start and die thing were symptoms but i don't know.
