Car is sorta running....

Ok well I finally got the car running again, kinda. I recently had a collapsed lifter and a few bent pushrods so I replaced the pushrods and installed a set of Comp R lifters. The first couple times I started it, it just died. Then I started it again and revved it a few times to keep it from dieing and it ran like crap. Basically would just about stall then get back up to idle and almost stall again. It sounds like there is a pretty good vacuum leak somewhere so I am going to check the obvious stuff later like the elbow and whatnot, but my question is, do you think that I tightened the rockers too tight? Or would it just not start at all in that case? I did about 1/8 of a turn for the preload.

Any help is appreciated, Thanks

Did you do a leak down or compression test? You gotta wonder why the push rods bent. What else in the valve train got Fudged up? Did the car stop running at the event that bent the rods or before that? Fuel pressure? Spark?

Sounds liek what my car did, and it was the rockers too tight. Take the rockers, set them where you think they should be, then loosen them . Then loosend them again, lol. Comp R's are finnickey like that. Give it a try...

Thats what I thought it could be, but I only gave them an 1/8 of a turn preload so it shouldn't be that bad, or at least i wouldn't think so...plus I hear a lot of air coming from somewhere so I am hoping thats the problem.

If its not, what is the easiest way to loosen the rockers without taking the intake back off? Can I just back off the allen set screws and then loosen each one the same amount? Or will that throw stuff off since some will be on the lobes and some won't?

Thanks guys

I have comp 810-16 lifters I believe that's an "R". Anyway I set my preload at 3/4 turn. If you can get a hold of a vacuum gauge it might help. I believe that a very erratic vacuum would point to valve lash being too tight. Adjusting lash while engine running mine bottomed out at 1+ turns past zero lash then it started to stumble.

Rockers that are too tight wouldn't cause a leak so loud you can hear it though would it? Wouldn't it just cause erratic idle rather than a leak like have nothing attached to the TB?

Just meant by my above post that if your preload is at 1/8 turn then that isn't your problem.

I know with my car a small leak like a vacuum line disconnected it did not change the idle. Maybe a bigger leak would cause idle problems like intake gasket failure but it should be pretty noticeable where it was coming from. If you are burning oil its bottom manifold leak.

What procedure did you use to set lash?

Like slopokrodrigez said maybe a leak down test should be done. Maybe you have a bent valve.

All set, I forgot to hook up one of the hoses that goes from the intake to the throttle body and now it runs perfect, probably better than before it broke in the first place. Maybe this will cure the problem of my lower trap speeds too....

This is exactly what my car is doing. Once it warms up it is ok though. My comp r`s are at 1/8th of a turn on a 7/16th stud. I`m thinking this is to tight comp says .002-.004 preload. One the car warms up there is less preload on the lifters since everything has expanded and the car runs better.

But just out of curiosity, which vacuum hose from the intake to the TB was off?
