Car shutdown on me while driving!

I was on my way home from work in my 1993 Z28, doing about 40, and heard a funny noise. I look down and my RPM was at 0, gave it some gas, and nothing. I try to move over to the shoulder but my power steering is gone, and my brakes don't want to work properly. I finally get over after cutting off some cars and it won't start. New battery was put in last week, and the power is there, it just seems like there's no spark. Anyone ever had their spark go out while driving? Scared the hell out of me. Now it's been towed to my buddy's shop waiting to be looked at. What could have caused this?

It could be a lot of things, including sudden opti death syndrome. Check fuses first. Check for spark, fuel pressure and scan for any trouble codes.

Re: Car shutdown on me while driving!

My 94 did that for some reason and it progressively got worse and more frequent, but always started back up after a minute or so. While getting the PCM Tuned it just died half way through. Got a new PCM, a good tune and <Knock on wood> it hasnt happened since. Good luck man
Jon

PS Now that I think of it I actually had the same problem three right after i bought the car. The first time the coil went, the second time the ICM went, third time it was the opti. This was in a matter of a month right after I got it. It was extremly frustrating.

It was the opti. Now I have to sell a kidney to pay for it.
