Car shut off and wouldn't start.......again

Well, if anyone remembers my last problem, the car just shut off while I was driving it. After ripping it apart thinking it was the opti, after a new coil, plugs, wires, ICM, and checking the PCM, it turned out to be the opti wiring harness.

So today, I put everything back together and plug it in. Everything seems to be fine, but after about 30 minutes of driving the car shuts off again. No sputtering or anything, just turned itself off. It would crank, and *almost* start, only to crank some more. After being pissed for a few minutes, I tried it again and it started. Then it happened again, and again, and again, until I got home. Any idea what this could be?

I ended up returning the opti, since I found out the wire was the problem. I have no way to scan it, since it is OBD1, unless I take it into a shop

So, it is definately electrical, since the car just shuts off. I am going to check the PCM tomorrow by taping on it while the car is running, and see if that makes it do anything wierd. Could this be the opti???

Just thought I would add something......

My fuel pump seemed to be making a lot of noise before I took the car for a spin. I could hear it constantly inside and outside of the car. Never heard it like that before. And then when the car wouldn't start, with the key in the ON position, the fuel pump was turning on and off every few seconds. That isn't normal is it?

This doesn't seem like a fuel problem though, unless for some reason it is just cutting the fuel? Could that be a possibility?

Check your fuel pressure. Guage is under $40 at the parts store. Everyone should have one in their toolbox.

Cheers.

This may sound a bit off path but check the voltage when the engine is on... Your dashboard gage should be a good indication.

You are aiming for 13.8 volts with the engine on and about 12 with the engine off. Or better yet get a buddy with a volt meter and read it at the battery contacts. The thought of your voltage regulator gone bad crossed my mind... if the voltage shoots up it may overheat your electronics and when you move that conector on the opty perhaps you are resetting the PCM from over heating protection mode.... If It even has one that is.

Just a thought that crossed my mind.

Well, before Igo buy a fp gauge, would that be a likely cause? Does this sound at all fuel related. And I have my own meter, I am getting good voltage while running and off.

There's a fuel pressure gauge in your future, I can sense it, lol.

UPDATE:

I took the car for a drive and of course it shut off. When it got up to temp, it turned off. And it won't start until the temp drops a little. But, if the keuy is left in the ingition, it won't start at all until the key is pulled out and put back in. So, it has to do with some part of the ignition overheating.

When it wouldn't start, I checked the voltage and I was getting the signal from the opti to the ICM, so the opti is oiut of the question. MAybe shoebox can help me out.

Does this sound like an opti problem? Could the opti still be bad if I was getting between 1-4V at the ICM?

I think you just defined it. Your ICM sounds to be overheating. Do you have it spaced away from the head? Try that and see if it gets better. If so then you may need an new ICM.

Were you getting spark at the plugs, too? Dave's suggestion of the ICM might be valid, but so is the fuel pressure. You just have to catch it in the act to prove it (the hard part).

Thanks for the help again shoebox, I fixed it about 6 months ago now

To the guy above him, it ended up being a combination of things. The opti harness had become corroded, so I had to replace that, and when it still didn't work I replaced the opti and it has been fine since.

I see, now. Someone woke up an old thread.

That kinda shows the benefit of going back and posting what fixes the problem.
