Car runs good before it warms up. Is the MAF used in open loop?

I am thinking the MAF is the problem as I had a pretty good backfire when I first tried to start the motor (coils were labled wrong). Flame came out about 6 inches throught the maf (had no cai on at the time, just open maf).

When the car is cold it drives a world better then warm, so I am wondering if I can just unplug the maf to eliminate that possiblilty.

Thanks,
James

PS- I already tried cleaning the MAF to no avail.

Yup, I'd just unplug it and see how it runs... I think it's used whenever the motor is on, but I'm not 100% on that.

I had a bad closed-loop issue, turned out to be a bad coolent temp sensor.

unplug your O2's and see if it runs better.
A friend or use to be friend had a custom made y pipe and I told them that the leak with the crap header flange set up they had was scortching the O2's and two weeks later they did and the car ran better than it did with them plugged in.

The MAF sensor is used at all times. It will still run though without it plugged in. Just unplug it BEFORE you start it and it will use the MAP sensor instead of the MAF sensor. If you unplug it while it's running it will stall.
