car problems

I've been having some problems with my z28
I get very bad gas mileage
my car surges at idle, and studders when I drive (this happens intermitently)
it sometimes stalls it surges so bad
my fuel pressure is at 33psi idling, it onlygoes to 3psi when I prime it; the pressure drops right away when car is turned off
car starts up roughly
and I have a loss of power, and engines runnin rough
I am 99% sure that my fuel pump is the reason for all of these problems, however if you have any objections to this please let me know

Also today I think my starter went, all a sudden I went to start it up and it turned over once very slowy then stopped..so I tried again and it did the same thing but then fired up
then I stopped again and tried to start it up but it didn't turn over at all and just made one click noise, and then a wirl noise from the starter.
however after I push started it, it stalled on me a while after andit turned over really slowly like 3 times and stopped, since then it just make the click then whirl noise from starter...also since this happened today, the starter makes a clicking noise when I drive

please help me so I can fix these problems, thankyou

Re: car problems

Scan for codes....
Fuel pressure regulator?????
Check connections to battery/alternator and starter.... Corrosion????Loose????
Check the battery, might be bad...... And the alternator, should read 13.8~14.2 volts when vehicle is running.....

Re: car problems

It's a brand new red top Optima, I just cleaned the screws that go into the terminals,
regulator works & alternator works fine

Re: car problems

Could have a bad ground for the battery. Check the ground location. Clean the connections to the starter too.

REPLACE YOUR FUEL FILTER

Or you injectors could be leaking filling you cylinders up with fuel causing them the hydrolock which is why your car turns over so slow (Just kidding)

Re: car problems

I just replaced the fuel filter last week, and usually with a leaky injector you will put out alot of black smoke, or gas can sometime leak out the tailpipe

Re: car problems

Do you have cats?
Have you replaced your sparks plugs and if you did, did you make sure to gap them all to about .045?
Have you checked your O2 sensors?
Have you sea foamed your engine lately (this helps alot)?

If so it's probably your fuel pump.

Re: car problems

I would definately try sea foam. My car smoked for a good 7-8 minutes an i only had 60k miles. Go to advanced auto and buy a can of sea foam for $4.98.

-Make sure car is at operating temperature.
-Unhook the brake booster line at the brake booster then slide it on just enough to keep from leaking vacuum. (otherwise car will not stay running)
-Start the car and remove this brake line plugging it with your thumb
-Get the bottle of Sea Foam near it and let it suck it up keeping the correct Air/sea foam ratio (it's not hard, you may stall the car once or twice trying)
-Let it suck up about half of the bottle (you should have started to notice smoke by now) then stall it or turn it off.
-Let it sit for about a half hour
-Start it up and rev it, take it out and romp on it for a while

There will be ALOT of smoke pouring out of your exhaust. This is carbon deposits burning up. These cause your valves to not seal properly resulting in bad gas mileage.

Re: car problems

Nope no way. I have done it on a 1984 porsche 944 N/A (4cyl), a 1992 Twin turbo 3000gt(6cyl) with 183k miles (soooo much smoke), and my firebird formula(8cyl). So i've used it on a variaty of cars. It's safe for your O2 sensors as well. I put it in my oil about 500 miles between changes. It definately cleans alot of gunk out.

It's petroleum based, smells almost like deisel fuel, so it's fine to put it in your engine. You can put it in your gas tank too. It cleans your injectors, but can clog them too as well as your fuel filter. It cleans the tank and lines which is good except they deposits go into more delicate things like the injectors.

Re: car problems

First you should smell the oil for any signs of fuel. Second, the cause of your fuel pressure dropping should be found right away. There are several things to check. Pinch off the supply line as someone cuts power to see if it still drops. If so you have a problem with an injector or FPR. To rule out the FPR, check the vac line to see if it's wet. Chances are as others have said, you have a sticky injector. Seafoam although effective, will take way to long to cure that problem. You should have the injectors cleaned professionally. Off the rail is better but they can be done on the engine using a cleaner like 3M makes. I use it and it is highly effective. But check the oil for the smell of fuel NOW.

DO NOT run the engine anymore than trouble shooting it if you have fuel comtaminating the oil. You will obviously need to change it right away.

You should also check to be sure you don't have a dead cylinder.

Re: car problems

I changed my fuel pump and it fixed my starting problem, however it still surges like a misfire plus the exhaust still smells like gas, I will be checking fuel pressure tomorrow, so the fuel pump solved one of the problems
